Aviation has always been more than an industry to Obed Amoabeng — it has been a calling. From the moment he understood how aircraft worked, he was hooked: the engineering, the physics, the sheer ambition of putting metal in the sky and connecting people across vast distances. That fascination never left him. It grew into a career in mechanical engineering, a pursuit of a pilot's licence, and ultimately, a conviction that he could build something better.
As a frequent traveller himself, Obed experienced firsthand what millions of Canadians face every time they book a domestic flight: opaque pricing, unexpected fees, unreliable schedules, and a general sense that the airlines were working against their passengers rather than for them. He sat in those same crowded terminals, watched departure boards flip to "delayed," and paid those same hidden bag fees that appear only after you've already committed to the fare. He felt that frustration personally — and he refused to accept it as the inevitable reality of flying in Canada.
Then came 2024. The collapse of Flair Airlines and Lynx Air removed the last meaningful low-cost alternatives from the Canadian domestic market. For Obed, it was a moment of clarity. The gap was real. The need was urgent. And he had the engineering mindset, the aviation knowledge, and the traveller's perspective to do something about it.
OAD Airlines was born from that moment. Built by a traveller, for travellers — shaped by someone who knows what it actually feels like to need a reliable, affordable flight from Edmonton to Toronto on a Tuesday morning. For the people, by the people. Headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, launching from YEG — Alberta's airline, and Canada's honest one.
